The most useful approach to use in critically analyzing The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway among those three analysis which were posted by Paul Wadden in last NP lecture is the analysis that Santiago as the Archetypal Hero. That's because the entire story is a tragic which is most typical type of ancient story, and Santiago standed against hardships alone like Archetypal Heroes. However, this analysis is not enough because there too many letters which implies the Christianity. Then I think the most appropriate analysis of this story is the story of christian saint's story and the hero of this story is a saint who have given tremendous power by spirits like Archetypal Heroes.
